Selective & Manual Blur

Blur Only the Faces
You Want to Hide

Face recognition-powered selective blur keeps specific people visible while anonymizing everyone else. Plus a manual blur brush for custom redaction — license plates, documents, anything. Works on photos, videos, and livestreams.

ArcFace Face Recognition

SmartBlur uses ArcFace, a state-of-the-art face recognition model, to identify individual people in your photos and videos. The system creates a biometric embedding for each detected face and compares them to your reference library. This means it can reliably tell people apart — even in crowded scenes, varying lighting, and different angles — so you can blur specific individuals while leaving others untouched.

✅

Blur Some, Keep Others

Tag the people you want to protect — SmartBlur blurs every instance of their face across all frames and images. Everyone else remains unblurred. This is ideal for interviews, documentaries, and group photos where some participants consent to being shown while others need anonymization. No manual per-frame editing required.

🖌️

Manual Blur Brush

Draw directly on any frame or image to add custom blur regions the AI might miss. The manual blur brush works like a paint tool — click and drag to cover license plates, documents, tattoos, screen content, or any area that needs redaction. Brush size is adjustable, and the strokes persist across frames when applied to video.

🎯

Face Exclusion List

Build a list of faces to exclude from blurring. Register a face once, and SmartBlur will skip it in every frame going forward. The exclusion list persists across sessions, so you don't need to re-register people each time you open the application. Add or remove entries at any time.

Works Across Photos, Videos & Livestreams

Selective blur and the manual brush work in all three SmartBlur modes. Use face recognition to protect specific people in a batch of event photos, exclude yourself from blur in a video recording, or keep your face visible while blurring everyone else on a Zoom call. One tool, every format.

🔒

On-Premise — Your Faces Stay Local

Face recognition data never leaves your machine. ArcFace embeddings and your face reference library are stored locally and used only for in-session matching. No cloud API calls, no external servers, no data transmitted. SmartBlur processes everything on your hardware, making it suitable for environments with strict data residency requirements.

Controls & Parameters

Fine-tune recognition sensitivity, brush behavior, and blur style for precise control over what gets blurred and what stays visible.

Recognition Mode

Toggle between "Blur All" (default), "Selective Blur" (blur only registered faces), and "Exclude Faces" (blur everyone except registered faces).

Face Registration

Register a face by selecting it in the preview. SmartBlur extracts an ArcFace embedding and adds it to your reference library for future matching.

Brush Size

Adjust the manual blur brush diameter from small (precise redaction of text or small objects) to large (covering entire regions in a single stroke).

Brush Persistence

For video: choose whether manual brush strokes follow detected motion (sticky) or stay fixed at the drawn coordinates (static).

Match Threshold

Control how strict the face recognition match must be. Higher threshold = fewer false matches but may miss the person in difficult angles. Lower = more forgiving matching.

Blur Style & Intensity

Gaussian, Pixelated, Solid fill, or Overlay — with adjustable intensity. The selected style applies to both AI-detected and manually brushed regions.

How Selective Blur Works

1

Register faces

Open your media or start the camera in SmartBlur. Select a detected face and register it to your reference library. SmartBlur extracts an ArcFace biometric embedding — a mathematical representation of the face — and stores it locally.

2

Choose your mode

Pick "Selective Blur" to blur only registered faces (protect specific people), or "Exclude Faces" to blur everyone except registered faces (keep yourself or your subject visible while anonymizing everyone else).

3

AI matches faces across content

SmartBlur scans every frame of your video, every photo in a batch, or every frame of your live camera feed. Each detected face is compared against your registered faces using ArcFace matching — hits are blurred or skipped based on your mode.

4

Add manual brush strokes (optional)

Use the manual blur brush to cover anything the AI doesn't catch — license plates, documents on a desk, screen content, tattoos, or any region you want redacted. Strokes composite on top of the AI blur layer.

Who Uses Selective & Manual Blur?

Interviews & Documentaries

Film interviews with multiple participants where the subject consents to being shown but bystanders and crew must be anonymized. Register the subject's face once — SmartBlur keeps them visible while blurring everyone else automatically across the entire production.

News & Journalism

Protect confidential sources and whistleblowers by registering their faces for selective blur. All other faces in the footage remain unblurred, preserving the natural look of the scene. The manual brush handles non-face redaction like license plates and documents.

Event Photography & Conferences

Process hundreds of event photos where VIPs and speakers consent to being shown but attendees do not. Register the speakers, set mode to "Exclude Faces," and batch-process the entire folder — speakers stay visible, everyone else gets blurred.

Law Enforcement & Legal Evidence

Redact specific individuals in bodycam or surveillance footage while keeping officers and persons of interest visible. Use the manual blur brush to cover badge numbers, screen content, and sensitive documents within the same workflow.

Medical & Clinical Research

Blur patient faces in clinical recordings while keeping researchers and medical staff unblurred. The manual brush covers patient charts, monitors, and other identifying information that falls outside face detection zones.

Education & Classroom Recordings

Record lectures and classroom sessions where the instructor is visible but students are anonymized. Register the instructor's face for exclusion, and SmartBlur handles the rest — no post-production manual masking needed.

Frequently Asked Questions

How does selective face blur work?

SmartBlur uses ArcFace face recognition to create a unique biometric embedding for each face. You register the people you want to blur (or exclude from blurring) by selecting their face in the preview. SmartBlur then matches those embeddings against every detected face in your photos, videos, or live camera feed — blurring or skipping each face based on your rules.

What is the manual blur brush?

The manual blur brush is a paint-style tool that lets you draw custom blur regions directly on any image or video frame. Use it to redact areas the AI doesn't detect — license plates, documents, tattoos, screen content, or any region you want to cover. Brush size is adjustable, and strokes can persist across video frames.

Can I keep my own face unblurred while blurring everyone else?

Yes. Register your face in SmartBlur, set the mode to "Exclude Faces," and start the camera or process your media. SmartBlur will blur every detected face except yours. This works in real-time on livestreams, on recorded videos, and on batch photo processing.

Does face recognition work with masks, glasses, or different angles?

ArcFace is trained to handle partial occlusion, accessories, and a range of viewing angles. Recognition accuracy is highest with clear frontal views, but the system still performs well with profile views, sunglasses, and partial face coverage. You can lower the match threshold to catch more difficult matches.

Is the face recognition data sent to a server?

No. All face recognition processing runs locally on your machine using the ArcFace model bundled with SmartBlur. Face embeddings and your reference library are stored on your device and never transmitted externally. No internet connection is required for selective blur to work.

Can I use selective blur and the manual brush at the same time?

Yes. Both tools work simultaneously. SmartBlur handles AI-driven face recognition and blurring in real-time, and you can draw manual brush strokes on top for any additional regions that need redaction. The two layers composite together in the final output.
